Cookies
You should be passionate about the subject you are blogging about…well…that is what all the experts say. OK, I’m writing about baking cookies, no I am not at all passionate about baking cookies or anything else for that matter. However, I am passionate about photography. What does that have to do with cookies? A lot….I am a terrible baker, but I am a pretty good photographer.
It started around the holidays. I decided to bake cookies with my 2-year-old granddaughter. We were going to make melting snowman cookies. They are very cute and I was told “easy” to make. We had all the supplies; all I had to do was place the premade sugar cookie dough on the baking sheets. Easy enough. Then frost the cookies to make the frosting look like it is dripping off the cookies (melting). Then you zap marshmallows in microwave for a few seconds (not a min) pop the melted marshmallow on top of frosting and then decorate each cookie to look like a Melting Snowman. It wasn’t that easy, the cookies were too small, the marshmallows too large, and no one ever told me about something called Royal Frosting. I used cake frosting, it doesn’t melt. I didn’t even bother decorating them as you can see below. The only thing I could do was to take a picture of them with my iPhone and tell Hailey, the cookies didn’t come out. She was very understanding, especially for a two year old.
Fast forward a few weeks. We are going to try making sugar cookies again. All I had to do was cut the cookies from the premade tube, place on cookie sheet and bake. How can I miss this time? I did! Hailey and I worked together putting the cookie dough on the pan. We then went up to the studio, and I was watching the time. A couple of minutes later, Lindsey yells….Are you watching the cookies, where is all the smoke coming from.” By the time we got back down to the kitchen the house was filled with smoke, and the smoke detectors were going full blast. We are frantically opening windows and putting fans on. Hailey came down to the kitchen and asked for cookies. I told her the cookies weren’t very good, they burnt…..didn’t faze her at all. She simply said, “oh, ok” and turned around and went back to playing. As you can see, the only thing left to do was pull out my iPhone and document it.
By now my family and friends are just shaking their heads at me. Some with promises to teach me how to bake cookies, others saying just put away your cookie sheets and go to the store for home baked goods, and some even offered to make me cookies.
I’m not deterred that easy. I am determined to make cookies (that are edible) with my granddaughter.
We are going to try chocolate chip cookies. This time I got a bag of Pillsbury bag of mix. All we have to do is add, butter and an egg. Out comes the iPhone. This is going to be documented from the start. I did consider pulling out all our camera equipment, however, that would really defeat the purpose of this activity. The point was to make cookies with Hailey. Well, the cookies came out quite well this time, everyone is enjoying them. And it is amazing what you can do with an iPhone camera. Not so sure how much baking I am going to do, but I do plan on documenting the everyday little things that happen with my iPhone. No need for the studio lights and backdrops all the time. Sometimes an iPhone is just perfect and it brings the passion into cookie making.
